Stepan Bakalian, 90, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Saturday, May 24, 2025. Born and raised in Aleppo, Syria, Stepan lived a life full of love, hard work, and pride in his roots.

In 1952, Stepan moved to the United States and made New York City his home. Shortly after, he joined the US Army, serving as a paratrooper in Germany at the end of the Korean War. His time in the military showed his courage and determination, qualities that stayed with him throughout his life.

Back in New York, Stepan became an active member of St. Illuminator's Armenian Church. It’s there that he met Seta, the love of his life, while singing in the choir. Their connection grew, and they got married on June 2, 1974. After living in Woodside, Queens, they eventually settled in Lyndhurst, New Jersey, where they raised their family and created countless memories over 46 years.

Stepan worked as a photo engraver, first in Manhattan on 7th Avenue and 25th Street, and later at Imperial Graphics in Belleville. He was known for his dedication and skill, working hard until he retired after many years in the field.

Stepan had a big personality and strong beliefs. He loved a good cigar, adored his wife and sons, and was incredibly proud of his Armenian heritage. More than anything he loved his grandchildren and celebrating their milestones.

Stepan leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, and pride. He’ll always be remembered as a devoted husband, a loving father and grandfather, and a true Armenian who lived life his way. He’ll be deeply missed by everyone who knew and loved him. Rest easy, Stepan.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the visitation at Nazare Memorial Home Inc., 403 Ridge Road, Lyndhurst on Tuesday, May 27, 2025 from 4 - 8 PM. Vigil service at 7 PM.  All will gather on Wednesday, May 28, 2025 at Sts. Vartanantz Armenian Apostilic Church of New Jersey located at 461 Bergen Boulevard, Ridgefield, NJ 07657 where a service will begin at 10:30 AM.  Interment to follow, Hillside Cemetery, 742 Rutherford Avenue, Lyndhurst, NJ.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Stepan's memory to Sts. Vartanantz Church or St. Illuminator's Church, 221 East 27th Street, New York, NY 10016.  Express condolences to Stepan's family by using our tribute wall.
