Anthony J. Giammetta, 99, died on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. Anthony was born and raised in Lyndhurst, moving to Rutherford in the early 50’s after he married his love, Ann Mauro, and lived there since. Anthony enlisted and served in the United States military, not once but twice. First in 1944, during WWII into the Army Air Corp, which became the Air Force, as a Staff Sergeant and Radio controlman and technician. He was in the 9th Air Force, 64 Fighter Wing, 355 Fighter Group, 357 Squadron. He served in Germany, France, and Austria, in the European Theatre of Operation. He was also stationed in Nuremberg, Germany for the Nuremberg Trials. His unit, which received a presidential citation, was called Steeple Morden Strafers and were known for low flying P-51 Mustangs, strafing enemy airfields, locomotives, etc. Anthony also received an award for sharp shooting. He enlisted in the Air Force again during the Korean War. He was extremely proud of his service to our country andnever took his dog tags off. After the war, he began to workalongside his father and grandfather in the family business, M. Giammetta & Sons Inc., Trucking and Rigging of North Arlington, serving the East coast for many years, including delivering aerospace equipment to NASA at Cape Canaveral, Florida. In addition to the family business, Anthony spent many years in Forida visiting his families’ multi-generational orange orchards in Winterhaven, Florida.
Anthony met the love of his life, Ann, at a dance. Though Ann was hesitant at first, he soon caught her attention once he pulled her out on the dancefloor and flashed his dimple smile. They were married February 21, 1954. Anthony and Ann were devout Catholics and together, they traveled on faith pilgrimages, including to Fatima and Medjugorje. Anthony was a committed family man, who adored his wife, loved his children and cherished his grandchildren and great grandchildren. His legacy will live on in our hearts as we continue on without him, honoring his memory by our unending commitment to God, Country, and Family. Anthony is predeceased by his beloved wife, Ann (nee Mauro) Giammetta of 44 years, his parents, John Giammetta and Madeline (nee Scarangella) and his brothers, Michael, John, Jr. and Arthur Giammetta. He is survived by his loving children, Lyn Derkacs& her husband, Richard, John Giammetta & his wife, Sharon,and Patrice Pulford & her husband, Kenneth, by his dear grandchildren, Brittany Sinclaire & her husband, Graham, Kimberly Franco & her husband, Frank, Jacquelynn Barilari & her husband, Brett, Erica Pulford Smith & her husband, Harry, Angelica Hall & her husband, Jason, Thomas Derkacs & his wife, Kim, and Ryan Pulford, by his great grandchildren, Anne, Braxton, and Everett Sinclaire, Logan, Juliet, and Eloise Franco,and Dalton and Carmine Barilari, and by many nieces and nephews.
Family and friends are invited to attend the visitation at Nazare Memorial Home, Inc., 403 Ridge Road, Lyndhurst on Sunday, July 27, 2025 from 2pm – 6pm.
