Nicholas J. Spina Obituary

Nicholas J. Spina, 99, died peacefully on Thursday, January 22, 2026.  Mr. Spina was born at home in Lyndhurst and was raised there, living his entire life in town “down the hook."  In January of his senior year of high school, Nick was drafted into the United States Army and served his country proudly from 1945 - 1946, where he was sent overseas and participated in the occupation of Japan.  When he returned, he began working with his brother, George in the Deli / lunch business and had met his bride, Antoinette Merrill.  They began to date, soon after got engaged and married. Nick was a career Truck Driver, and when he married, he began working for the Paolozzi Brothers in town and was proud to be a part of their family business for 20 years.  After many years of service, he retired from Liquid Carbonic of Harrison.  Nick built his own home on Sanford Avenue, for himself and his wife and eventually his four sons and was entrenched in the town of Lyndhurst, particularly the Community of Mount Carmel Church.  He was a devout Catholic and was an active parishioner, serving as a Eucharistic Minister and volunteering for many events and functions of the church, especially the annual Our Lady of Mount Carmel Feast, where he would be seen enjoying an Italian Ice, camped out near the Lyndhurst Pastry Shop concession stand.  He was a family man and his caring reached beyond his wife and children, to all his family, friends and neighbors alike. His presence and warm smile will be missed by us all.

Nicholas is predeceased by his beloved wife of 62 years, Antoinette (nee Merrill) and his young son, George Spina in 1959.  He is survived by his loving children, Mark Spina & his wife, Suzanne, Thomas Spina & his wife, Carol and Joseph Spina & his wife, Susan, by his dear grandchildren, James, Nicholas & his wife, Erin, Corey & his fiancée, Julianna, Tabitha, Erica, Audrey and Sean, and his great-grandson, Thomas.  Also survived by his many nieces and nephews, friends, and his Mount Carmel Family.
