Deborah Anne Lago, 74, known to all who loved her as Debbie, passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday, February 24, 2026. Born in Newark, New Jersey on March 28, 1951, she was the youngest of four children to Robert and Margaret Wilson, and grew up to become the kind of woman who lit up every room she entered.
Debbie was a proud resident of Lyndhurst, a lifelong parishioner at both Mount Carmel and Sacred Heart parishes, and a devoted member of her community. She attended Archbishop Walsh High School in Irvington and built a life defined by hard work, warmth, and deep loyalty to the people she loved. Over the years she worked as a Realtor throughout Bergen County, served as a payroll supervisor at William Paterson University, and as an Administrator in the Property Maintenance department for Lyndhurst Township — roles that suited her natural gift for connecting with people and her deep roots in the community she called home.
In January 1973, upon his return from duty in Vietnam, Debbie married the love of her life, James "Jimmy" Lago. Together they raised a family, built a home, and shared a special passion for raising Shetland Sheepdogs. Jimmy preceded her in death on March 24, 2020, and there is little doubt that after six years apart, they are together again.
Debbie was the life of every party — full of laughter, brimming with Irish pride, and always the one with a story to tell or a friend to make. She loved to read, cherished her animals, and most of all, she treasured time with her grandchildren, who brought her a joy that was unmistakable to anyone lucky enough to witness it.
She is survived by her son Daniel Lago and his wife Sarah Lago, her daughter Mara Dixon and her husband Robert Dixon, and her five beloved grandchildren: AvaClaire (18), Ryder (16), Emma (8), Isla (5), and Paloma Rose (1). She is also survived by her sister Marilyn Rears and her brother Peter Wilson. She was preceded in death by her husband Jimmy and her brother Robert Wilson.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the visitation at Nazare Memorial Home, Inc., 403 Ridge Road, Lyndhurst, NJ on Friday, February 27, 2026 from 4 - 8 PM. All will gather at the funeral home on Saturday, February 28 at 9:30 AM and a funeral mass will be offered at Mount Carmel Church, Lyndhurst at 11 AM. Cremation will be held privately. All who knew and loved Debbie are welcome to join her family at San Carlo Banquet Hall in Lyndhurst following her mass to continue celebrating her life.
