Richard Michael Myrlak Obituary

Richard M. Myrlak, 72, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and faithful servant to his community, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 26, 2026.

Born on July 17, 1953, in Jersey City, New Jersey, Richard was the son of Rafal Myrlak and Stephanie Myrlak (née Hetman). From an early age, he was guided by a strong faith, a deep sense of responsibility, and a commitment to serving others.

A graduate of St. Michael’s High School and Jersey City State College, Richard met his cherished wife, Ruby (née Reyna), in college and they shared 50 years of marriage grounded in love and faith. Richard later earned his master’s degree in education, reflecting his lifelong dedication to learning and mentorship.  Richard’s career was defined by service. He began at Ramapo College as Assistant Director of Athletics, where he coached and mentored students, and later served in Hudson County government as Director of Parks, Chief of Staff, and County Business Administrator. He eventually returned to education leadership with the Hudson County Schools of Technology, where he spent decades guiding and inspiring students to lead lives of purpose and integrity.  A devout Catholic, Richard lived his faith through action. He served on the Board of Directors of the United Way of Hudson County and as Director of the WIC (Women, Infants & Children) program in Jersey City. Richard volunteered extensively, including coaching youth basketball at St. Michael’s in Union City, supporting the Special Olympics, working with Moravian College basketball, running basketball camps at College of the Holy Cross, and supporting the Educational Arts Team of Jersey City. He believed deeply in giving back and serving others with humility and compassion.  Above all, Richard was devoted to his family and he supported them with unwavering love and strength.  He enjoyed traveling with his family and exploring the world with them, including trips to Antarctica, Egypt, and many countries throughout Europe, and he especially cherished Aruba, a favorite destination throughout the years.

Richard is survived by his beloved wife, Ruby; his son, Richard, and daughter-in-law Carrie; his grandson, William; and his sister, Christine Myrlak. He was predeceased by his brother, John Myrlak.  Richard will be remembered for his deep faith, his devotion to family, and his lifelong commitment to service. His legacy lives on in the many lives he touched.
