Carl R. Janes, 98, died on Friday, July 10, 2026.  Mr. Janes was born and raised in Scranton, PA before moving to NJ in the 1950s.  He lived in Kearny and Rutherford before making Lyndhurst his home for close to 60 years.  Carl proudly served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II from 1946 - 1947.  After his honorable discharge, he entered the work force as an airplane mechanic at Teterboro Airport, applying his knowledge and craftsmanship from his servicetime to his occupation.  Gifted in every aspect of mechanical work, Carl was equally skilled with aircraft, heavy machinery, and industrial equipment.  He was a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 825 and went on to work for Foley Caterpillar in Piscataway for many years where he was known as a dependable and highly skilled mechanic who could fix just about anything, retiring in the early 90s.  Working as a mechanic was more than a profession; it was a passion that extended beyond the workplace, as he enjoyed spending countless hours working on cars. Carl was also the neighborhood kids’ go-to handyman. He was always ready to fix a bike or patch a tire, and he could turn a lawnmower into a go-cart—or a go-cart into a boat trailer. He was an avid water skier and enjoyed teaching everyone how to ski.

Carl was predeceased by his beloved wife, Rita Janes (nee McHale) in 1993 and by his dear sisters, Trudy Jackson and Berta Vanderhoos.  He is survived by his loving children, Melanie Tucci and her husband, Peter and Albert Janes.
