John was my younger classmate at HHS and teammate on the football team and my teenage friend. I haven’t spoken with John since soon after high school, but I’ve always asked about him whenever I found someone who might know.
In those sparkling thoughts an old man has of his first days as an immortal young man, my many times driving with John in my Fiat two seater with the top down, along the streets and roads that tie Harrison, Kearny, North Arlington and Lyndhurst together...those memories are golden.
He was always good to see whenever and wherever we met as teens in Industrial Beehive Harrison, a good omen to see John. Think about your own formative high school years and those kids you dreaded to see in the halls or the streets or park….and then those kids that were great to see. That’s what John was to me, always great to see and always a friends’ exchange even if quick.
How I loved to see the memorial video presented on this website! In all these years that I hoped to learn about John from asking about and hearing nothing, the video was an incredible delivery of joy, but the joy came much too hard. How I cried to suddenly see my teenage friend and football teammate in his life’s abundance but with the sting of the sudden truth delivered with it.
John was such a good looking man., with a Hollywood smile. Al Pacino could only wish to look that good. Such things help immensely when you’re a teenager driving the circuit in a convertible and John’s your shotgun companion!
Real friends talk together with such mutual comfort. While cruising and always with our football mindset, John citied the metaphor that in driving you can’t let anyone hit you, because it’s like getting tackled in football!
John as a high school Junior emerged as an unusually fast sprinter and he was sure as a ball handler. My entire four year football experience was a collective misery because we lost so many games under a moron head coach. In all those years of football drudgery, the greatest single play of glory, the loudest roar ever from our bleachers came when John Cinardo caught a long pass from Bobby Bachmann and sprinted away from the defender into the end zone to start the game 7-0 against our annual rival mighty Queen of Peace. Our side of the field just exploded with celebration as never before in all my high school time playing football.
Throughout my life I’ve recalled these wonderful events about John when the storytelling warranted. I wish I could remember more of my friendship with John, but beyond a dreamlike montage of teenage animations, posturing, his unforgettable smile and confidence, I cannot.
I don’t know how John viewed our crazy world since we talked so long ago and I imagine I’ll never know, but as I approach my own demise in time that is now less than more, I’ll have more comfort with his memory.
Seeing John with his family in all those wonderful photos, I wish them peace and philosophy after their bitter loss. I wish them to know John’s departure made me cry.
