Deepest condolences to the whole extended Spina family. Mario was so kind to my mother (Serafina) - he would take her shopping early on. Then when he could no longer drive, he would always call and be social. I am so glad she got to visit him at the rehab facility before the social isolation phase. Thinking of you all. Dear Gale and family,
I’m so broken hearted that the patriarch of our family is no longer with us. I will never forget how he used to promise not to tickle me when he flipped me through his legs when I was little, and then he would tickle me anyway in mid flip. When I visited him in the nursing home before they shut their doors, he reminded me of it, so I think he loved it as much as I did. I will miss his endless stories, especially about the war, and will always remember him playing cards with your mom at my house at the Saturday night “sisters’ club”. And I loved that his brother married your mother’s sister—my mom and dad. It meant we were related on both sides and he and your mom were at every family gathering. He was a special dad and uncle, and will always hold a special place in my heart.
Love, Judy

I’m so lucky to have been able to have a great-grandfather around all these years. 98 years is an amazing life lived, that’s for sure. So many of my favorite childhood memories were with you. I’ll miss your constant WW2 stories you’d tell me (you thought they annoyed me, but I loved them!). I’ll miss your goodie bags you’d put together for me each time I visited. One of my favorite dishes of all time is still your elbows & peas you’d make for me when I was younger, I’ll have to see if Grandma has that recipe! Most of all, I’ll miss you. Rest In Peace Poppy♥️

Sadly, my grandfather passed away this past Sunday. Born in Abruzzi, Italy, he came to the US as a baby. A World War II Veteran in the glider division, he lived in my home town of Lyndhurst most of his life. He helped build the house that my mother and uncle grew up in and where my brother and I spent most of our childhood/teenage years. He lived to see two '20s decades. I find myself envious of all the changes and advances in the world that he experienced in his 98 years on Earth. Everyone would always joke around that he would outlive us all He always had the best stories and was able to remember every detail of past events no matter how long ago they were. What he was able to retain in his mind was nothing short of amazing. So much of my family history is now lost with him. He was the patriarch of the family, raising his own kids and also having such a strong presence in raising his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a jokester and often stubborn, but he helped out anyone when they needed it, as long as he physically could. He was always moving around and keeping himself busy, constantly doing projects and chores, for not only himself, but anyone else who needed it, until his body would not allow it It has been an honor and privilege to have had him in my life this long. I will be forever grateful. What adds to the hurt is that we cannot properly celebrate his life right now, which he so deserves, because of the current situation in the world. Grandpa, you will be missed more than you know. There will be a huge emptiness felt by your absence. You touched the lives of so many. I will remember you through the many stories you told me, the many trips to the park, the holidays, the hours spent upstairs talking and playing games......no matter what memory I have, you has always been part of it...have always been there. He is now reunited with my Grandmother, his brothers, parents, and the many other family members that we have lost before him. I love you. I miss you. You will never be forgotten. May you be at peace now.

Mario was my daughter Lexie's great-grandfather, she was his first great-grandchild. They had such a special relationship, one that she will always keep close to her heart. I will always remember how he helped me when I first had Lexie. He was an angel! He drove us to doctor appts, the park, the laundromat...everywhere. He was so special to me as well.
When Lexie was 3 1/2, I had my daughter Melanie and even though Mario wasn't her blood relative, he treated her no different. He treated her just as special for all these years. Thank you for being you. Poppy. We love you always!
Rest In Peace, Poppy. We love you. Please watch over my girls.

My heart is broken for your family. I have so many happy childhood memories with you "Uncle" Mario, the gardening, slideshows, and coming over while my parents played cards. You always took the time to make me feel special. Mario, you were my Dad's best friend (even though you two always argued) he is lost without you. Although we feel great sadness now, we will always hold onto that light you left in our hearts. Give Aunt Rita and my Mom a big hug for me.
Love and condolences to your entire family,
Sherri

I have so many good memories it’s hard to pick just one because you were the best father ever. You were always present and there for your children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Now you are in heaven with Mom. Don’t aggravate her too much. I love you and miss you already! XxxOoo Gale
