Back in 2013, on a cold and windy night, the night before - "the night before Christmas" ~ December 23rd. I tripped and fell in my mom's kitchen. WOW! I fractured my right femur, the right arm and smashed my head on the corner of a dry sink.
Both my husband and sister found me lying on that floor in shock and quickly had me rushed to Clara Maass Medical Center. My family doctor, Dr. DeMayo, came into my emergency room and asked, "what happened to YOU???"
They had me scheduled for surgery. I found out later that Dr. DeMayo personally, on my behalf, asked the great and talented Dr. Frank Femino to perform the surgery where a rod was placed inside my right leg.
Dr. DeMayo obviously wanted the BEST doctor to heal me, and that he did. I will never forget what Dr. Joe did for me. Again, he wanted the BEST doctor on staff to perform my surgery, he asked, he received, and it's years later, now... and I'm still doing great.
Thank you again, Dr. DeMayo for that special request on my behalf. We all LOVE and MISS you!!! God bless you in Heaven, forever! My little tOy poOdle, Kayleigh, who goes to the park with me, thanks you too!

He was a beautiful soul who cared deeply for his patients. I fear I will know no other like him and that fills me with great sadness as I fear those born from the same mold are very few and far between. As long as I draw breath he will be remembered. Rest in peace Dr. Demayo.

I met Dr. DeMayo in 1972 while working part time at Clara Maass Hospital and knew him two short years. I was impressed with his thoroughness and compassion toward his patients. What really stuck with me was the way he always signed his handwritten doctor’s orders: “Thank You. Joseph De Mayo, MD.” I never came across another physician with such written courtesy, which reflected the courtesy he showed to everyone he met. May Dr. DeMayo’s family have comfort in their grief knowing the impact Dr. DeMayo had on those he encountered in life, especially in his loved profession.

Dr D was the best. He worked so hard but loved what he did. He had a dry wit and always made you feel like he genuinely cared.
I’ll never forget coming down with some bug in the middle of the night before having to fly with my 3 young girls by myself. I drove to the office and waited for it to open. I apologized for not having an appointment but I said I needed something to help me. He said “you don’t need an appointment” - gave me a shot and sent me off with his instructions: “gargle, use lozenges, and the rest. I made it where I had to go and was on my way to feeling better the next day!
No doctor was ever more available and caring....he is truly missed. May he rest in eternal peace.

There are not enough kind words to describe the amazing Dr. DeMayo. He was not only my general physician but a shoulder I could cry on. Through my life he was always there for me physically and emotionally. His words of wisdom always had a healing effect. He was the epitome of what a doctor should be and I know in my heart, there will never be anyone that could ever measure up to him. We lost the best but God definitely gained an angel. My condolences to the family. We were all blessed to have him in our lives.

I am so saddened by the loss of Dr. DeMayo. My life is so much better for having known him and having been his under his care for so many years. He also took care of my parents and always took the time to chat with them as well as taking care of them and giving a correct diagnosis 100% of the time. We always left his office feeling better and optimistic. We will never forget how he came to my mom’s house to give her a flu shot when she was debilitated by Alzheimer’s disease and unable to get out of the house. We also always knew we would get our calls from him with test results even at 9 o’clock at night. He never seem to stop working or caring about his patients. My condolences, along with love and sympathy from the rest of my family go out to his wife, children, grandchildren, and to Dr. Costanza, Marianne, Bridget, Judy, and Heather at the Primary Care office.

So sad to hear of Dr Joe's passing! It certainly is losing an honorary family member! The only Dr. I've had since moving to Lyndhurst in the late 60's till very recently when he stepped down. The best Dr.no doubt! His knowledge was second to none. His caring was even greater than that! My Mom and Dad adored him and they passed it on to me! Always took his word and advice to the fullest and he was always right ! Always confident in his diagnosis's and treatments. His humanity was also stellar where you can joke around and he had a wonderful sense of humor but always took a lil extra time to talk serious and discuss a more serious personal matter! His answers were always a comfort! I want to send my deepest sympathy to Mr's DeMayo and his entire family and friends. Certainly will be missed by thousands!!! Sincerely,Mr & Mr's Louis J.Filardo Jr. and family.
