Obituary of Lucille G. Sciurba
Lucille Gertrude Sciurba, age 84, of Murrells Inlet, SC and formerly of Wantage and Sparta, NJ, passed away peacefully with her family by her side, from complications of cancer surgery, at Morristown Medical Center on March 30, 2021.
Lu was born on August 14, 1936 to Gertrude and Saverio Sciurba in Lyndhurst, NJ, the town where she grew up and attended school, graduating from Lyndhurst High School in 1954 where she was a popular student and athlete, along with her two younger siblings, brother Paul and sister Trudy. Lucille’s high school yearbook stated that she was “Sweeter than Springtime”, and she was.
Lu worked for ITT in Clifton, NJ as a young woman and married Edward Bonham in 1957. They had two children, son Jeff born in 1962 and daughter Dana born in 1963. Lucille’s young family lived in Fairfield, Rutherford, Hasbrouck Heights and Kinnelon, NJ in the 1960’s and early 70’s.
In 1972, Lucille bought Jan’s Bar and Grill on Route 23 in Wantage, NJ and worked on upgrading it to the most famous steak, prime rib and salad bar restaurant in the area. The Steak-Out Restaurant was renowned for its bountiful salad bar and all-you-can-eat prime rib special, with music and dancing every Friday and Saturday night. Lu enjoyed many years cooking for and taking care of her customers who became great friends while the restaurant operated successfully until she sold it in 1990.
Lucille spent the next 18 years spending time with her family, doing some traveling, and especially cherishing the fact that she saw her three grandchildren every day, and did everything possible that a grandmother could do with her grandchildren.
In 2008, Lu’s next adventure had her moving to Murrells Inlet, SC to live near her brother Paul and sister-in-law Lorraine, in the beautiful community of Wachesaw Plantation East. During the last 13 years there, she made dozens of close friends and enjoyed numerous social activities with her new neighbors.
Lucille is survived by her daughter Dana Bonham and her husband Vincent Signorile, of Jersey City, NJ, and son Jeff Bonham and his wife Carla of Wantage, NJ. Beloved brother Paul Sciurba and his wife Lorraine of Murrells Inlet, SC. Cherished sister Trudy Garofalo and her husband Sal of Whiting, NJ.
Lucille’s greatest relationship in the last 33 years of her life was with her three beloved grandchildren, Brandon Bonham of Wantage, NJ, Stacy Bonham of Wantage, and Derek Bonham of Brooklyn, NY.
Lu leaves behind many beloved nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and had a particularly special relationship with her nieces Donna Muniz, Michele Van Der Linde, Rainy Gardineer and Arlene Rafferty.
Relatives and friends will be received at Nazare Memorial Home, 403 Ridge Road, Lyndhurst NJ on Monday April 5th 2021 from 4 – 6 pm. Funeral and burial service will be private.
