Dear Koehne Family, I am truly sorry for your loss I was shocked to hear this sad news. I only knew Eric for a short time since 2017 where I met him at Eddie’s Fourth of July party. He was a gentle giant and so much fun to hang out with and celebrate our country’s independence. He was so proud of his family and would talk about all of you all the time. I will never forget Eric we had so much fun in the short time we knew each other. I posted some pictures that I will cherish and help me remember what a great person Eric was.
Warm Regards
John Ferrara

Memories of Eric…omg do I have memories of Eric. We met sometime…I don’t know where. Probably gaming via Sean Driscoll in ’84 or ’85. Eric was a little guy so we called him Little E since we hung out with another E. In ’86 I went away for the summer and when I came back, he was not so little anymore but the name stuck anyway, at least for a while. My first words upon seeing this larger version of Eric was “You got Big!” and I proceeded to wrestle him to the ground. Physical horseplay was now fair game and an even match. I dug out old photos I have not seen in decades looking for him. Evidently we did not take many pictures together. No pictures of skiing. No pictures of Seaside. No pictures of us Jeeping or riding dirt bikes back off Old Stirling road, me with my moon bike and him with that trike. Once I was riding on the back of that trike through the woods and he tried to drive over a log. The front wheel went up, the rear wheels stopped at the log, I slid off and he landed on my chest. It seemed like a good idea at the time. I was sure I had a picture of him leaning up against my corvette (smiling) one summer day at Watchung Reservation but could not find it. Maybe it’s just in my head.
The pictures I did find were long ago but they are how I remember my friend, smiling, happy, enthusiastic and always on the lookout for fun. A couple of the pictures were from January 2000, right before I moved to Colorado. It may have been a going away party. In the Skirmish picture he’s the young man in the upper right corner. The others are him looking dashing at Eric T’s wedding. I am sure I have a picture of him at my wedding somewhere…if I could find our wedding pictures.
More memories
Diesel Dasher! If you ever need proof of Carl and Vikki’s wisdom, look no further. 0 – 60 in……I am not sure it ever went 60. This was the car Eric had available to him when he started driving. It was slooow. The only way you could get in trouble in that car was to fall asleep behind the wheel.
“Rabbit Food!” Said in a dismissive tone – Eric’s opinion of anything resembling a leafy green vegetable.
“Worthless Sack of Crap” – a saying he picked up that’s one of my favorites. It’s clean and unambiguous.
I recall going to a NYG game with Carl and Eric and someone else. Carl driving his 924, Eric in the passenger seat and someone else and I folded up in the back “seat”. My guess is that was Oct 11, ’92.
Handstands! Eric loved to do handstands and walk on his hands. He was pretty good at it too. One time tailgating at Giants Stadium he did one on the roof of his Dasher. He came down on the hatch slamming it shut and sending cans and speakers flying. He got an ovation from the crowd.
I spent the night on his front porch once in the summer of ’88 (Beer). My wrists and ankles were one solid mosquito bite. He laughed and made a comment about the number of drunk mosquitos flying around that morning.
We all loved the band Triumph. He was especially fond of the song “Magic Power” which he called “Young Wild & Free”. We had some pre show cocktails at Dave’s and at the show he was having a tough evening. He was just slumped in the seat for the first half of the show until the band played the first few notes of that song. He twitched, then struggled to his feet, stood up on the seat, raised his fists in the air and yelled out “Yeaaah!” He had rallied and he was back for the evening.
Once I went to the shore to visit him and his family. They had a deflated inflatable pool toy out back. I had just spent two weeks camping and blowing up an air mattress daily and was cocky. I was going to blow it up in some record amount of time. He laughed at me and proposed a wager – a bottle of something I believe. I lost. Well, the toy had a 2 foot long busted seam. The only way it was getting blown up was with explosives. That was easy money for him that day.
He came to visit me twice in Colorado. The first time I was working nights and he arrived late so he went to the apt and crashed. I came home the next morning and opened up the door and holy cow did he jump to attention! He wasn’t too far out of basic and it was apparent that lazing in bed was not a thing he could do anymore. It was winter. We went skiing and watched a NY Giants playoff game in a local bar. The second time he was on his way back from California. It was summer and he was driving a green Saleen Mustang with him. He insisted I drive it (I know…) and we went up Battle Mountain pass. No pictures except in my head.
We lost touch for a decade or two but I was looking forward to someday making some new memories as older, wiser, respectable gentlemen. It’s so sad to say that this will have to wait. Please save a seat at the big table for me, Little E. I pray that the love you shared here will see those closest to you through the difficult and lonely times ahead. Godspeed my Friend.

I was so saddened to hear about Eric's passing this week. He was a good friend and I have many happy memories playing cards with him at my house on Elm Street in Clifton. I also remember enjoying rounds of golf with him whenever we could find the time. It was always a good time when Eric was with us. I send my most sincere condolences to his wife, Janice, his children, Kylie and Colton, and his entire family. He will be sorely missed, but I pray that you all find some comfort in the happy memories you had with him. With much love, Richie Friedhoff
