Obituary of Orlando Saa

Orlando E. Saa Ph.D. 88, of Lyndhurst entered into eternal life on Saturday May 11, 2013 at his home in the presence of his loving wife of 32 years Lorraine Cutillo-Saa. A man dedicated to education, Orlando received his diploma in Classical Studies in Spain, and a Bachelor�s Degree in Psychology. He later went on to Canada where he received a B.D. in Theology from St. Mary�s University in 1959. Orlando continued his education receiving Masters Degree�s in both Philosophy and Spanish and eventually receiving his Ph.D. in Spanish from Tulane University in 1973. Born in Havana Cuba Orlando immigrated to the United States living in Alabama where he was on faculty at Spring Hill College until 1964 before settling in New Orleans Louisiana, where he became a Professor at Loyola University. Dr. Saa moved to New Jersey in 1974 and was appointed to William Paterson University as a professor of Languages and Cultures, where he remained on faculty for 36 years before his retirement in 2010. During his tenure at William Paterson University Professor Saa was a devoted teacher of Spanish literature and language as well as Greek and Latin. Dr. Saa established the Department of Language and Cultures� Foreign Language Poetry Recitation Contest. A scholar of Spanish Renaissance drama Dr. Saa published four scholarly books, nine scholarly articles, and over 100 original poems in journals and poetry anthologies. He was actively engaged in presenting papers at over 25 domestic and foreign academic conferences. Dr. Saa and his wife Lorraine endowed the university�s first scholarship for a student majoring in Spanish: The Maria Saa and Marietta Cutillo Family Scholarship Fund. In September of 2012 the Department of Languages and Cultures at William Paterson University unanimously nominated Orlando for the Emeritus Status which was approved on December 5, 2012. He will be sadly missed by his devoted wife Lorraine, a brother Adolfo Saa and his wife Candida, a host of nieces and nephews and several great nieces and nephews, and many cherished colleagues and endeared friends. He was predeceased by a brother Jose and sister Hermenia Gener. The Funeral Mass will be offered on Wednesday May 15, 2013 at 11am at Sacred Heart R.C. Church Lyndhurst; Bishop Dominic A. Marconi will be the celebrant. Entombment will follow at Holy Cross Chapel Mausoleum North Arlington NJ. Visitation will be held MONDAY 5/13 AND TUESDAY 5/14 EVENINGS ONLY from 7-9pm, at the Nazare Memorial Home, 403 Ridge Road Lyndhurst, NJ 07071. Arrangements Nazare Memorial Home in conjugation with Failla Memorial Home. Memorial Contributions made to The Maria Saa and Marietta Cutillo Family Scholarship Fund are preferred, envelopes will be provided at the Funeral Home
