Fanelli, Sr., Joseph R., 86, of North Arlington, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 21, 2015. Joseph was born August 24, 1928 in Brooklyn, NY. Shortly thereafter his family moved to the Bronx, NY where he attended Samuel Gompers Technical High School. Upon graduation in 1946, he enlisted in the United States Navy. After boot camp, he served on the Aircraft Carrier U.S.S. Midway followed by the U.S.S. New Kent. He completed his five years of service, including one year during the Korean War. He was stationed at the submarine base in New London, CT, before being honorably discharged. Joseph was very proud of his naval service and loved to talk about his experiences. He always looked forward to his annual U.S.S. New Kent reunions. In fact, he and his wife hosted the NJ/NY reunions both in 2006 and again in 2012. He was employed in the electrical department of New York City Transit Authority. After 37 years, he retired as General Superintendent of Power. He is predeceased by his parents, Rita and Frank Fanelli and a brother John Fanelli. Joseph is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Florence M.(nee Amendola) Fanelli,(originally of Lyndhurst), by his daughter, Nanette Fanelli, by his son, Joseph Fanelli, Jr., by his brother Carmine Fanelli & his wife, Marie, his sister-in-law, Roxanne Fanelli and several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral from Nazare Memorial Home, Inc., 403 Ridge Road, Lyndhurst on Saturday, April 25, 2015 at 10AM then to Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, North Arlington where at 11AM a Funeral Mass will be offered. Entombment Holy Cross Chapel Mausoleum, North Arlington. Visiting hours Friday 2-4 & 7-9 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Joseph's memory to St. Vincent DePaul Society, Queen of Peace Church, 10 Franklin Place, North Arlington, NJ 07031 or a charity of your choice.
