Paterno, Mildred A. "Millie", 92, of Carlstadt, passed away on Saturday, August 26, 2017 at her home. Millie was born on September 27,1924, the eldest daughter to Dominic & Minnie (nee Longo) Saggio. Mildred worked most of her life starting in 1947, where she met her husband, Mark and then married in 1949. Mildred was well known in the town of Carlstadt as the crossing guard on Washington & Central Avenue. Thousands of school children crossed her path under her watchful eye. Millie was a landmark on that corner, admired by the children, teachers, parents and the police department. In 1990, Mildred retired from her post, only to take on a new role along with her newly retired husband, as Bus Driver and her as Aide. Mark drove, Mildred again watched and assisted handicap children along the bus route. In 2001, after her husband became ill, they both retired, at that time, Mildred was 77 years old. She is predeceased by her brother, Frank Saggio and her beloved husband, Marcus "Mitt" Paterno in 2002. Millie is survived by her sister, Marie Pesaro and many loving nieces and nephews, whom she endeared as her own, watching over them through the years. She was a good person, compassionate and always smiling. Aunt Millie was the sunshine of our lives!
