Al was a kind hearted man. Whenever I came into his store, he would always ask me "What can I get you kid?" He would talk to me all the time about what was happening in our community. He would talk and talk and talk! I'm going to miss joking around with him!! My condolences to Nellie and to all his family and friends. May he rest in peace!!

In Loving Memory of Allen Wallentine. Allen was and will always be remembered for being one of the Good Guys. In fact he was the leader of the Good Guys. Numerous people looked up to him. He was behind the counter of his deli Ruesch on a daily basis. Hardly ever taking a vacation. How could he take a vacation when so many people depended on him. They depended on his intelligence, quick wit and common sense. Allen was dependable. A rock that his family, friends, neighbors and customers could anchor themselves to when the storms rolled in. Allen had a huge, generous heart. Everyone who walked in his store knew that Al would be there available to listen. He gave advise on problems and he shared in the happiness of good news and joyous events. Al was old school in the best ways. He kept a pencil over his ear and sometimes added your purchases up on a brown paper bag; Jersey City Deli Style. Ruesch Deli was a haven on the corner of North and Nelson Avenues. A ninety degree humid day in Jersey City could be cooled down with an ice pop or refreshing drink from "The Store". Of course Allen's bright smile and most times a handshake accompanied that treat. Friday fishcakes were a staple. Also roastbeef, "the best coldcuts ever" and salads too. Allen's deli catered food. All the important events in his family's and customer's lives he was a part of in the best way providing the food. The center of any celebration. Football on Sundays was not complete without a "Super sub" from Ruesch D & L. In the winter customers would stop in for coffee, tea and hot chocolate and to warm up with some conversation with Al. The line at the counter didn't always move fast but no one minded the wait because they knew when it was your turn you had Allen's undivided attention. For how ever long the interaction needed to be; Allen never rushed away from anyone. You could always get the "best buttered roll" there or the "best bagel". Along with all these food staples came Allen's smile and his friendly greeting. He knew many, many of his customers on a first name basis. Having owned the deli for so long he knew your family history as well if you were from the "Western Slope" neighborhood where Ruesch Deli was a fixture. Many nights after standing behind his deli counter all day Al walked out with a few newspapers tucked under his arm for his elderly customers to get their daily read. I'm sure Al's conversation those evenings meant as much or more than the newspaper. Another personal service delivered by Allen Wallentine, proprietor. He did it with a smile. To Al it was all in a days work; the right thing to do. There will be an endless void on the corner of North and Nelson Avenues that was created with the passing of Allen. His memory will live on with his family, friends and neighbors and customers alike. Every time a neighbor greets another on Nelson Avenue or stops to carry someone's groceries or holds a door for another person Al will be looking down form Heaven smiling and giving them a nod. That is the way Al would have treated everyone he met. "Paying it forward" was Allen's way before they put a name on it. Allen has been paying it forward his whole life. Now he will reap the benefits. We miss you so much already Allen. Rest Easy Big Guy and say" Hello" to Wayne for me. I'm sure he was one of the first to take you in his arms. My deepest condolences to his Children, my beloved Nieces Erin and Emily, my beloved Nephew Jon and my beloved Great Nephews Christian and Alexander his Grandsons. His Legacy will live on through you. To his family my thoughts and prayers are with you at this most difficult time. ~With Love and in Memory~ Pat Hale

I am deeply heartbroken! This hurts deeply. Al wasn't just a friend, he was like a second dad - always giving me great advice and ALWAYS giving me a helping hand when I needed it and he did so without judgement and with a truly generous heart. Al was family! He made everyone who had the honor of being in his presence feel loved and welcomed and safe. I can't believe he is no longer with us. Life will never be the same. I will miss Al and all the fun, witty conversations we shared for over 13 years! Our angel has gone home and his impact on all of us will be felt until we also take our last breath. I share my condolences with immense tears as I write this to his entire family. And I pray for your peace during this extremely difficult time.
I never left the store without saying... "Bye, Al. I'll see you later!" -- well, now I shall say it one last time...
Bye, Al. I'll see you later!
Although our hearts are broken and sad, we will all see our angel friend again one day in heaven!!

I grew up on Nelson ave and along with Al was a PS #27 Alum. I knew many of the owners of Reusch over the many years but can honestly say Al was the most special. He had a heart of gold and had the best personality ever. He knew all of his customers like family and when I moved away and came back many years later, remembered me the moment that I came into the store. He has touched more people that most of us will do in a lifetime and always be remembered and missed . RIP

Dear Steven, Linda, Rosie, Dominick, Erin, Jonathan, Emily , Linda's Kids, Margie girls, Brian and Patty, Nellie and family, Everyone else who loved Allen ! I am so so very sorry about what happened to my dear cousin. .I know he got the virus and everything happened so fast, and many people have died from it. Unfortunately one of our own did too. I am very sad and I will miss him ... I remember when he and Steven were born because I was seven at the time. Then they were the cutest little toddlers I've ever seen with those big brown eyes and blonde hair. They were always smiling and happy. I could never tell them apart and they used to think that was really funny. I don't think anyone could except for his sisters and parents. When they were grown men I could tell them apart better but not from behind. They were always so dear to me. They were twins but individuals too tho. I remember us all being little kids and spending so many family times at the Lake in the summers and holidays together. I cherish those memories.
Then We all grew up and accumulated families of our own. Life got too busy for all of us and we didn't see each-other very much anymore. We are all spread out all over New Jersey. I wish I could see my cousin Allen one more time. I'd hug him so tight and tell him how much I always loved him. I've had to ask God to do that for me until I can see him again.
I am praying for all of you that God will comfort you in this devastating time. I am so terribly sad and I will miss him. I always loved him and I always will. I know he went to Heaven because he believed in Jesus. Now he is with God and his parents and all the loved one that went on before him . I know I will see him there someday and that comforts me for now. Keep that in mind that you will see him again too.
Please use extra precautions and stay safe and healthy. God bless each and every one of you.
Love and blessings from,
Cousin

This one hurts. Known Al for over 20 years. He was more than a friend, he was family. As I called him my white dad :)
I was at his store everyday, not only to buy something but to check up on him or to see if he needed something from home depot. If I didnt go to the store for a couple of days he would text me to make sure everything was ok. I would always text him for home improvement advice and he was always proud of the results. Going to miss his conversations and jokes. An amazing human being who was always there when you needed him. Thank you for being such a good friend to me and my family. It was a pleasure knowing you.
You will be missed dearly, Rest In Peace

I moved to Jersey City in Spring of 2016. My son was born shortly after in July. I never was a city person and had quite the trouble acclimating to the lifestyle. I discovered Al’s store very quickly as it was only around the corner from me. I found myself going there a minimum of once a week. Eventually, we became what anyone would call “good buddies.” He knew my wife and my in-laws. He watched my son grow up for just shy of 4 years. I would stop in on my way home from work and not to buy anything, but to just say hi and gossip a bit. He always had an ear open for everyone and he ALWAYS knew everything before it was ever made public. He was that kinda guy who just made you feel warm and welcome in the most North Jersey way possible. When my family and I moved more south in the Heights, I promised Al I’d still give him my business. He was the type of person I’d travel that extra mile for. I’ll miss seeing him with his Grandkids playing outside on the corner. I’ll miss him asking what I’m looking for and after four years, he knew I was always random. I’ll miss the conversations we had. I’ll miss my son walking out and saying “bye Al!” I’ll miss you, big guy. Rest easy my friend.

I was an old friend of Allen and Steven from PS 27 and shocked to hear of Allen’s passing. We hadn’t seen each other in 45 years, but we reconnected last October when I went to Ruesch’s not knowing he owned the store. I moved out of JC in 1975 and was only in the neighborhood for the day taking in the old sites. We stayed connected since October and he will be missed. He was a gentle soul. I am so sorry for your loss Steven and to his whole family.

On behalf of the Fitzgerald family I want to offer my condolences to Allen’s family. I was shocked and saddened to hear of Allen’s passing. Growing up in Jersey City the Wallentines were our next-door neighbors, in fact our houses were attached. I remember as children Allen and Steven (the twins) would drive their grandmother crazy. I can still hear her yelling and the boys laughing and they ran out of the house into the yard after playing a prank on her. Our old house has been knocked down and replaced with a new home but there is still a lot of good memories that remain in that spot. You couldn’t find a better block to grow up on than Colombia Avenue or better neighbors than the Wallentines.
R.I.P. Allen.
