Growing up, I would always hear jokes on sitcoms or on late night talk shows like Johnny Carson about mothers-in-laws. Well, I must have hit the lottery, because my mother-in-law was nothing like the jokes. She was so special and so wonderful to me and the whole family all the time.
I remember the first time I met Mom. I had driven out from the City to Antoinette’s house in Lyndhurst, NJ on a Saturday afternoon. This was one of our first dates, and was going to be our first date where we didn’t just meet for lunch during work hours or for a quick bite after work in the City. This was a "car date."
When I arrived, Mom was gardening in Antoinette’s front yard, while Antoinette was getting ready to go out with me. I always figured that Antoinette had asked Mom to come out to NJ that Saturday afternoon to check me out… Give her seal of approval, or maybe sound a warning bell if I wasn't right for Antoinette. Well, Mom understandably seemed a little wary when she first met me, but even so, she couldn't have been nicer. Antoinette and I had a fun date, and when I dropped her off back home, Mom was there, to make sure all was well. After that, I got to know Mom better and better, and that was great.
Quickly, Mom started to know the foods that I liked to eat, and always made sure they were on hand for me when I visited. From her famous rice balls, to her delicious potato croquettes, to the calzones with their delicious and delicate crust (my favorite was the Swiss chard calzone!) to the asparagus omelette, to broccoli pasta and so much more. In fact, I now make broccoli pasta for myself, Antoinette, and my own kids the way Mom taught me, not the way my own mother made it for me when I was growing up. And on Christmas Eve, Mom would always come over with an abbondanza of foods -- fresh clams oreganata ready to be baked during the meal, bacala that she lovingly soaked, rinsed, and softened to be perfect by December 24th, calzones, rice balls, and the incredible shoosha cavole ribbon pastries.
After Giovanna was born, Antoinette continued to work in her job in finance at the advertising agency for a while. Mom would make the long trek by subway from 63rd Street in Brooklyn to 63rd Street in Manhattan where we lived. At that point, Mom was in her late 60s, and that commute entailed a couple of subway changes, and a fairly long walk from the subway station all the way to our apartment on York Avenue, in all sorts of weather. But it wasn't just the length of the commute, it was what Mom was carrying. She would stay with us for several nights at a time, so would come with her own clothes and all, but also with a ton of food.... Different dinners for us, favorite foods, gifts, clothes and sewing, and other things to make things easier for me and Antoinette. Grandma would play with Giovanna all day, color with her, and give Giovanna her undivided attention while Antoinette and I were at work. After Antoinette became a full-time Mom, Mom would still make the long subway trek, always carrying a ton of food and other stuff, to Manhattan to spend time with her grandchildren... First Giovanna, and later Ava and Cararose. She loved coloring and drawing with her grandchildren.
Our apartment didn't have a guest room, and Mom had to sleep on the pull-out couch in the living room. It was an old, lumpy couch that squeaked and had a very thin fold-out mattress. The apartment had a beautiful east-facing view, but that also meant that the sun streamed in at the crack of dawn, waking up the babies, and all of us nice and early. The couch, the early morning wake-up, and the lack of privacy in the living room would not have been a comfortable situation for anyone. I would ask Mom how she was in the morning... If everything was okay? Mom always smiled and said she was fine. Not once, not ever, did she complain.
When we moved to Pelham, Mom would be able to take an Access-a-Ride car service to our house, which took about the same time as the subway – sometimes longer with traffic. At that time, Patrick was a baby, and she would come regularly to see her new grandchild, and to also see us and the girls. Mom was still laden down with food, clothing that she had made some sewing repairs on for us, and her own stuff, but at least she wasn't carrying it all by hand, since it could all be put in the Access-a-Ride car. That said, I know if we had stayed in the City, Mom would have continued to have done it all by subway anyway!
I remember a time we were driving to Villa Roma with Mom in the car. We were listening to a song by a group called R.E.M. that the kids really liked. It was a song called “The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonight,” and there is a repeated lyric in it that sounds really funny, but we couldn't figure out what the lead singer was saying, because in the song, the singer says the lyric super fast, over and over and the words are a bit indiscernible. Antoinette, the kids, and I started to make up words to fit the rhythm of that lyric and to sing along with the song. We were laughing and having fun. We must have played that song 15 times in a row during this drive. I looked over at Mom in the front passenger seat who was smiling during this one-song marathon and asked if she wanted me to play something else... Maybe some music she liked. She said no, no. Keep doing this. It's funny. Now, there's no way that Mom personally would ever choose to listen to this random early ‘90s rock tune, but she was just happy that her family was happy.
At Villa Roma, after dinner, we would head to the upper lobby in the hotel and sit on some couches and chairs around tables and play little card and other games that the kids had. There was no chance that any of the adults could beat the kids at these memory and matching and counting games, but Mom was always game to play, and laugh along when invariably one of the kids would come out victorious. Mom even tried her hand at making balloon animals with us, which can be a challenge for anyone at first, but she was game, and made some fun balloon dogs with the kids! And she loved watching the kids compete in all the various Villa Roma games and contests, and also sit by the pool while we all swam and played.
During COVID, we really, really missed Mom's weekly overnight visits to our house. That time was terrible of course for everyone. But in the time since the pandemic has settled down, we were able to be with Mom more in person again of course. The last big family get-together, aside from Christmas Eve, was on Antoinette's birthday on December 18th, when Frank and Ro hosted a World Cup party at Frank's office. Mom got to see her beloved Argentina soccer team, led by Lionel Messi, win the World Cup final over France in an incredibly tense game on penalty kicks after double overtime. We watched the game with English language commentators, not the Spanish play-by-play that Mom liked, as the Spanish channel didn't seem to be coming in. And we were all very noisy.
Somewhere in the back of my mind, I wondered if Mom would have more enjoyed watching the game quietly at home. After all, there are plenty of football fans who eschew going to Super Bowl parties -- where you can't really pay attention to the game itself – preferring to watch the Super Bowl quietly at home, to focus on the game, instead of on the social aspect of the party. That said, we all watched the World Cup Final together, and Mom was smiling throughout. I think that Mom really loved that her whole family was rooting along with her for her team. And when Argentina won, Frank's office erupted in shouting and cheering, and Mom was beaming as everyone was hugging her. Recently, in the hospital, a therapist was testing Mom, and asked her who won the World Cup, and she proudly said “Messi! Messi e Champion del Mundo!”
Mom/Grandma was an incredibly interesting person with so much to say. She was also very funny! She had so many interests and things she loved to do, and had an incredibly full life from beginning to end. At 87, she passed much too soon. Our whole family loved you so much. You were wonderful beyond words, and you'll be missed.
